(GLASGOW, KY) — William J. Travis, M.D., has transitioned to a full-time Hospice and Palliative Physician position at Hosparus Health Barren River. In this expanded position, Dr. Travis oversees the not-for-profit hospice and palliative care organization’s interdisciplinary care teams as they provide support to those facing serious illness across the region.

“Dr. Travis is a highly respected physician in the Bowling Green/Barren River area with more than 30 years of experience providing patient care,” said Community Director Melainie Plumb, RN, BSN. “He has been working with Hosparus on a part-time basis for the past six years and we are delighted he has decided to expand his role. His understanding of the needs of the community and his expertise in supporting patients and families facing serious illness makes him a huge asset to our team.”

Dr. Travis started with Hosparus as a part-time physician in 2016. Before joining the team, he served as medical director for T.J. Samson Hospice and T.J. Samson Inpatient Palliative Care. He served as chief of staff at T.J. Samson Hospital and was a founding collaborator for its hospice and palliative care program over 20 years ago. Dr. Travis practiced internal medicine at Graves-Gilbert Clinic for seven years and served on its board of directors. He is board certified in internal medicine and hospice and palliative care medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the American College of Physicians. He earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1983.

A native of the region, Dr. Travis is from Tompkinsville, Kentucky, and lived in Glasgow for 25 years. He now resides in Bowling Green where he maintains deep connections in the community and its development. He is the co-creator and former president of Sustainable Glasgow, Inc. and The Bounty of the Barrens Farmers Market. In his expanded position at Hosparus, Dr. Travis will continue engaging with members of the community by providing education and outreach about hospice and palliative services, in addition to visiting patients wherever they call home.

“My new role allows me to regularly see our patients wherever they are located – be that home, hospital, nursing or assisted living facilities,” said Dr. Travis. “I look forward to devoting my full time and energy to the care of our patients at Hosparus Barren River.”
