Hosparus Health CEO and President Phil Marshall has announced his plans to retire at the end of this year. Marshall has led this region’s non-profit hospice and end-of-life provider for more than 14 years during which time the organization has grown extensively from a daily patient census of around 470 to nearly 1800 today. The 41-county service area has expanded as well into western Kentucky and southern Indiana. Besides hospice care, the organization added palliative care to assist patients with advanced illnesses with pain relief while they continue life-sustaining treatment.

Board Chair Joanne Berryman said the Board will begin a national search for his replacement immediately. “Phil’s contributions to Hosparus Health during his tenure as CEO are immense. He is considered a leader in this industry both on a state and national level. Filling his shoes will be no small task,” Berryman continued. Marshall has agreed to stay on through February 26, 2021 in a transitional role.

While the organization initiates a national search for Marshall’s replacement, Cathy Zion and Cis Gruebbel will serve as interim Co-CEOs. Zion has been a Hosparus Health Board member for over 14 years, having twice served as Chair. She is owner of Today’s Media which publishes Today’s Woman and Today’s Transitions magazines. Gruebbel is also a Board member and has more than 30 years of experience in leadership, operations, quality, and nursing – and most recently served as vice president pediatric operations & chief nursing officer with Norton’s Children’s Hospital.

Recognized at the national and local levels for his accomplishments, Marshall was recently voted 2020 Most Admired CEO by Business First in the Non-Profit sector. Marshall was one of nine founding board members of the National Partnership for Hospice Innovation and is currently serving as National Board Chair. He is one of the founding members of the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council and currently serves on its Executive Committee. In addition, he is Immediate Past Chair of Health Enterprises Network (HEN) Board of Directors, which is part of Greater Louisville, Inc. (GLI). Marshall has served as Chair and in other executive roles within the Kentucky Association of Hospice and Palliative Care (2010-2019). He was also Chair (2011-2012) of the Bluegrass Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization International.

Prior to joining Hosparus Health, Marshall served as Executive Director/VP of the Norton Healthcare Foundation and Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Executive Officer at The Healing Place. Earlier in his career, Marshall held leadership positions with US Bank in Cincinnati, National City Bank in Cleveland and other Kentucky banking institutions, including Executive Vice President of Jefferson Banking Company.

He and his wife Kathi have three grown children and plan to split their retirement between their homes in Louisville and Naples, Fl.
