Free camp helps youth learn coping skills while finding connections and community after a loss.
(LOUISVILLE, KY) — For the first time this summer, the team from the Hosparus Health Grief Counseling Center is hosting G-Force Summer Day Camp, from June 6 to 9. Children ages 6-12 who are coping with a loss due to death are invited to attend this one-of-a-kind day camp experience.
“Our goal is to create a safe, accepting place where kids dealing with grief can meet others with similar experiences,” said Hosparus Health Grief Counselor and camp Co-Director Erin Guthrie, LCSW. “Campers will be guided through age-appropriate education to encourage healthy coping skills while having fun along the way.”
Campers will explore how grief impacts animals at the Louisville Zoo and learn about the science of grief at the Kentucky Science Center. Participants will learn about cultural traditions at Cave Hill Cemetery and explore the connection between mind and body at the Jewish Community Center. Licensed grief and loss counselors will lead campers through their daily themed activities. Screened and trained volunteers will help counselors with the program to provide everyone with a seamless and safe experience.
Camp starts each day at 8:30 a.m. at the Hosparus Health Grief Counseling Center, 3526 Ephraim McDowell Drive, Louisville, KY. From there, campers are transported to the day’s activities before returning to the Grief Counseling Center for pickup at 4:30 p.m.
“Grief is a force of nature, and so are our G-Force campers,” said Hosparus Health Grief Counselor and camp Co-Director Joe Ferry, LPAT, CT. “Our team of professionals provides campers with a supportive environment to ask questions and express themselves as they move through their grief journey.”
The program is free of charge for all participants, thanks to generous grants from the Diebold Foundation and the Woosley Foundation. The application deadline is Monday, May 8, 2023. For more information or to register, please visit hosparushealth.org/gforcecamp, or call 502-546-5451.
