Milestone marks achievement of $9.2 million fundraising goal toward $20 million community-supported project

Hosparus Health proudly announces the groundbreaking of its new Hospice Care Center, the region’s first and only standalone inpatient hospice facility, following the successful achievement of its $9.2 million fundraising goal by raising nearly $9.6 million to launch construction.

The Hospice Care Center is a critical expansion of compassionate end-of-life care for families across the region. Designed to serve patients with complex needs in a peaceful, homelike setting, the nearly 30,000-square-foot facility will offer 21 private patient suites, family gathering spaces, a chapel, and serene gardens for quiet reflection.

“When families can no longer care for a loved one at home, this facility will offer a supportive space that blends expert care with dignity and comfort,” said David W. Cook, President and CEO of Hosparus Health. “We’re grateful to our community for making this vision a reality—and for helping us take the first step toward delivering on our promise to meet patients and families where they are, with compassion and respect.”

“The opening of Louisville’s first standalone inpatient care center marks a transformative moment for our region’s healthcare system,” said Mayor Craig Greenberg, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony. “For decades, families have needed a space that provides both hospice care and grief support. Hosparus Health has been putting families first for over 45 years, and this new center is a testament to their continued innovation and compassion.”

The Hospice Care Center is being constructed next to the Harshaw Family Grief Counseling Center, located at 3532 Ephraim McDowell Dr. in Louisville, which opened in 2024. Together, the two facilities will form a comprehensive campus of care, designed to meet families’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs throughout serious illness and loss.

The $20 million project is funded primarily through philanthropy, and generous early support has made the groundbreaking possible. Milestone gifts have propelled the campaign forward, including support from Republic Bank and the Republic Bank Foundation, Norton Healthcare, Paula and Frank Harshaw, and the Legacy Foundation of Kentuckiana.

“We’re deeply moved by the generosity of our community,” said Tawanda Owsley, SVP/Chief Development Officer at Hosparus Health. “Reaching this goal is about more than dollars—it’s about giving families across our region access to care that affirms their dignity, honors their experience, and surrounds them with peace.”

Construction is expected to begin this fall, led by Koetter Construction. Fundraising efforts will continue toward the project’s total $20 million goal to ensure the Hospice Care Center is fully equipped with the resources needed to serve patients and families for generations to come.
