The Harshaw Family Grief Counseling Center will support community members of all ages coping with grief after loss.
(LOUISVILLE, KY) — Hosparus Health is thrilled to announce the grand opening of the Harshaw Family Grief Counseling Center at 3532 Ephraim McDowell Drive in Louisville. The nonprofit organization hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration today, marking the completion of the 7,000-square-foot facility that will significantly enhance the organization’s ability to provide grief support services to the community.
“For over four decades, our organization has remained steadfast in our commitment to offering comprehensive grief support services to anyone who needs them, regardless of their financial situation,” said Hosparus Health President and CEO David W. Cook. “Today’s opening symbolizes so much more than a new building; it is a significant step forward as we expand our reach and adapt to meet the evolving needs of our community.”
The grand opening event showcased the unique features of the Harshaw Family Grief Counseling Center. Guided tours revealed dedicated spaces for children, teenagers, and adults, including specially designed art and sand therapy rooms, ten counseling offices, and versatile group meeting spaces. Plans for the outdoor healing garden with meditation elements, currently in development, were also shared, promising further opportunities for reflection and solace once completed.
The state-of-the-art facility is named in honor of Paula and Frank Harshaw, whose philanthropic support was instrumental in raising over $4 million for the project.
“We have personally witnessed the profound impact of grief and loss, and our experiences have taught us the importance of accessible care during these challenging times,” shared Paula and Frank Harshaw. “We are passionate about supporting initiatives like Hosparus Health’s new Grief Counseling Center to help address this need and transform grief support in the community. This beautiful space offers a welcoming environment where everybody can receive vital services to help cope with life after loss.”
In 2023, Hosparus Health’s Grief Counseling team made a significant community impact throughout the organization’s service area. Its trained professionals held nearly 3,800 individual counseling sessions, over 220 grief support groups, and 50 specialty programs. These efforts provided over 1,330 attendees with a sense of connection and community, helping them navigate their grief journey with compassion and understanding.
“We recognize the complex nature of grief, which is why we provide a variety of specialized programs tailored to meet diverse community needs,” said Executive Director of Counseling Services Amy Hill. “From engaging book clubs fostering connection through reading to grief yoga sessions offering a physical release for emotional tension. Our art-based group series and remembrance services underscore our commitment to holistic support, ensuring access to resources for healing and growth.
