  • More Than a Meal: Volunteers Bring Nourishment, Comfort and Connection to Hosparus Health Families

  • News

Every week, Hosparus Health volunteers turn donated food into something even more meaningful for families facing serious illness: nourishment, relief and the reassurance that they are not alone.

In just two years, Hosparus Health’s partnership with Dare to Care Food Bank has grown from serving four families to supporting 20 to 27 families each week—more than 90 people who may be unable to reach a grocery store or food pantry because of limited mobility, transportation challenges, financial strain or the demands of caring for a loved one. Each delivery helps ensure that families facing serious illness do not have to face food insecurity alone.

The Teams Behind Every Delivery

Every delivery depends on volunteers working as one team. The pickup crew gets food moving early so deliveries stay on schedule. Sorters adjust to changing spaces, arrival times and the amount of produce available. Volunteer leaders keep orders and communications on track, while drivers travel through neighborhoods and along rural roads to place food directly into the hands of families who need it.

For hospice care families, these deliveries offer far more than groceries. They ease one practical burden for caregivers who may be unable to leave a loved one’s side, while giving volunteers an opportunity to check in, listen and offer a caring connection. Each visit reminds families that they are seen, supported and not facing serious illness alone.

Service Across Generations

Our most senior team member is still serving actively in their 80s—a powerful reminder that generosity, purpose and service have no age limit. Their example honors the strength of longtime volunteers and offers a challenge to the next generation: step forward, learn from those who built this program and help carry its mission into the future.

Today, about 15 volunteers help provide food assistance to more than 90 individuals every 1st and 3rd Tuesday. Together, they demonstrate what whole-person care looks like in action: recognizing the full range of needs patients and caregivers experience and responding with dignity, compassion and dependable support.

There is a place for everyone in this work. To explore Dare to Care volunteer opportunities, contact our Volunteer Coordinator at louisvillevolunteers@hosparus.org or 502-719-4155.
