Nonprofit highlights new care resources, volunteer opportunities, and expanded programs serving 41 counties across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
Hosparus Health and its palliative care affiliate, Pallitus Health Partners, proudly join the National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI) in recognizing November as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. This year’s theme, “We See the Whole You,” reflects the organizations’ shared commitment to treating every patient as a unique individual—honoring their experiences, values, and hopes while providing expert, compassionate care.
At Hosparus Health, care goes beyond managing symptoms. Interdisciplinary teams support the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—while walking alongside families and loved ones every step of the way.
“Hospice and palliative care are about more than medical expertise,” said David W. Cook, President and CEO of Hosparus Health. “They are about listening to each person’s story, honoring their choices, and ensuring that dignity and compassion remain at the heart of every decision. National Hospice and Palliative Care Month is an opportunity to reaffirm our promise to see the whole person, not just their illness.”
As part of this commitment, Hosparus Health broke ground in September on its new Hospice Care Center in Louisville—a first-of-its-kind facility in the region—designed to enhance comfort, accessibility, and holistic support for patients and families. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2027.
The Hospice Care Center represents the final phase of Hosparus Health’s multi-year Places of Compassion campaign, advancing accessible care through new facilities designed to be inclusive of underserved communities. In 2024, Hosparus Health opened the Harshaw Family Grief Counseling Center in Louisville, bringing individual and group counseling to anyone in the community experiencing loss. Last year, Hosparus Health grief counselors served more than 1,200 people through one-on-one sessions, and nearly 2,400 others took part in support groups, healing camps, and community events.
Through brand affiliate Care Guide Partners, the organization brought the comprehensive Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) to Elizabethtown last year by opening the William B. and Janet B. Schmidt PACE Center, which now serves more than 50 regional seniors.
For over 45 years, the nonprofit organization has been dedicated to providing comprehensive support—including pain management, counseling, and family assistance—through a committed team of 19 board-certified, full-time physicians and 32 board-certified, full-time nurse practitioners who deliver personalized, holistic care to patients and their loved ones at every stage of serious illness.
Hosparus Health invites community members to join its volunteer program, with opportunities ranging from patient companionship to administrative support. In 2024, nearly 600 volunteers donated more than 69,000 hours to serve patients and families across the organization’s 41-county region.
“Our incredible team members and volunteers bring empathy, expertise, and solutions to everyone we serve,” added Cook. “Their commitment fuels our vision and expands our ability to support more community members facing serious illness.”
National Hospice and Palliative Care Month also serves as a reminder that families don’t have to wait until a crisis to seek support. Hosparus Health and Pallitus Health Partners encourage anyone with questions about serious illness care to reach out early for information or a referral. Care teams are available 24/7 at 800-264-0521 or HosparusHealth.org.
