Donna’s Story at Hosparus Health’s Inpatient Unit
As her father’s health declined, Donna Allen knew he needed more than medicine. He needed comfort. He needed to be surrounded by family. He needed people who treated him with dignity, even when the days were difficult.
Donna had seen what that kind of care looked like. In 2019, her husband spent his final days at the Hosparus Health Inpatient Unit. When her father, James Bennett, arrived years later, she recognized the same warmth in the way staff welcomed him and in the way they made space for her family to be present.
James had a strong personality. He didn’t always make things easy, but Donna said, “The care he received was nothing short of amazing. The staff went above and beyond to ensure that he was comfortable and well cared for.”
Donna’s granddaughters spent the night at his bedside. When they became frightened, a nurse comforted them and let them know everything was going to be okay. “What they did for my father was truly appreciated,” Donna wrote in a letter to the care team. “Everyone there loved their calling, and it showed.”
She remembers how staff looked after her entire family. They allowed James’ brothers and sisters to visit overnight. They checked on Donna regularly. A volunteer named Jim sat with her, made her laugh, and prayed for her father. A chaplain visited and prayed with their family, providing a moment of spiritual peace they will never forget.
On the morning of February 16, James Bennett passed away with Donna by his side. “They told me he was gone, cleaned him up, and allowed me to get into bed with him,” she shared. “That gave me a moment of solace.”
“They not only address medical needs but also provide emotional support. It made a lasting impact on us,” Donna said. “The care they provided was nothing but pure love.”
