“Your greatness is not what you have. It’s what you give.”

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of  Hosparus Health. From the first group who banded together in 1978 to the more than 550 volunteers who support us today, we are incredibly grateful to those who selflessly give their time to further our mission. Last year alone, our dedicated volunteers contributed over 17,500 hours, providing companionship, honoring veterans, supporting grieving families, and much more.

In Central Kentucky, it’s impossible to talk about our volunteers without highlighting three exceptional women who have significantly impacted the communities we serve. Debbie Marks of Leitchfield (formerly of Louisville), Jo Emary of Radcliff, and Amanda Brown of Brandenburg have combined to give 100 years of service to Hosparus Health. Debbie has volunteered for 40 years, Amanda for 35, and Jo for 25. Debbie and Amanda are retired nurses, and Jo worked for many years at Fort Knox and other veteran-centered organizations. Despite their busy lives – building long, successful careers, raising families, and staying active in other community initiatives – they still found time to volunteer with us.

“It’s the greatest feeling in the world to help someone without getting paid for it,” said Debbie Marks. “I would tell anyone considering volunteering to give it a try – you will be hooked! It’s rewarding in so many ways.”

Volunteer Manager Annette Jones is grateful for Debbie’s commitment and friendship: “Debbie’s warm and caring nature is a great source of comfort for patients and their families and an inspiration to our staff.”

Amanda Brown, reflecting on her years of service, added: “It’s difficult to think I have been involved with Hosparus for so long – it seems as if it’s always been a part of my life. I am passionate about helping families during the worst time of their lives and am proud to be a volunteer!”

Annette praised Amanda’s dedication: “Amanda’s ability to connect on a deep and meaningful level makes her an invaluable member of our team. Whether sitting with a patient in their final moments or offering respite to a caregiver, Amanda’s presence brings peace and reassurance to everyone she serves.”

Jo Emary has volunteered at Camp Evergreen and continues to provide respite and companionship visits to patients and families. “I know what it is like to care for a dying loved one in my home,” said Jo. “I want to provide all the support I can to others going through that difficult time.”

Their passion is contagious, and their impact is undeniable. When asked about their favorite aspects of volunteering, all three found it hard to pick just one.

“Every part of the service is rewarding, from providing respite care to delivering the beautiful afghans and listening to family stories,” said Amanda. Debbie added, “Volunteering at Camp Evergreen with children and families working through grief has been a priceless experience.”

Both women agreed that more people should seek help from Hosparus Health sooner. “Many families struggle on their own to care for their loved one, not realizing the support available. Even as a nurse, I needed help when my parents required care, and Hosparus provided exactly that. They answered my questions in the middle of the night and provided me with the support I needed to be there for my mom and dad,” Amanda shared.
