The holidays can be especially tough as we remember those who are no longer with us. This year, the Brim Family will face the challenges of celebrating Thanksgiving just days after the first anniversary of their mother’s passing. As you read more about their journey, please consider donating to our new Inpatient Care Center, ensuring families receive the best possible care during this vulnerable time in their lives.
A Legacy of Faith and Resilience
Ms. Gayle Jennings, lovingly known as Ms. Gayle, radiated a vibrant, faith-filled energy that effortlessly attracted people to her. Renowned for her home-cooked meals, she delighted in hosting family dinners and catering community events. Ms. Gayle was the heart and soul of her family, always lighting up the room with her infectious smile.
When her family received the devastating news of her pancreatic cancer diagnosis last year, it felt like the world came to a standstill. After treatment options failed, the doctors recommended hospice services, but Gayle’s daughters, Kimberly and Kawania, were initially skeptical.
“Our Hosparus Health nurse, Tasha Hellman, definitely changed my mind,” said Kimberly. Tasha became the lifeline the family needed to keep Ms. Gayle at home. The tender way she cared for Ms. Gayle was only surpassed by her attentiveness to the family. “She always kept them informed and walked them through what was to come. She was exceptional,” added Kimberly.
As Gayle’s pain increased significantly, Tasha recommended the Hosparus Health Inpatient Unit, where the team was better equipped to provide around-the-clock care to relieve Gayle’s pain and allow her body to get the rest it desperately needed.
During her time at the unit, the Chaplain was a consistent source of support. “When I tell you she was there every day, I mean it,” Kimberly recalled. “Her spirit was so warm and inviting. She wrapped us in her prayers and gave us so much support.”
Gayle always tried to put on a brave face, refusing to let her family feel sorry for her. “She was always one to remain positive,” said Kimberly. Even throughout her illness, she would say, “If I don’t cry, you don’t cry. God has me!”
Like many families, the Brims didn’t know what to expect or how much time they had left with their mom. Once again, Tasha was there to help navigate the difficult conversation. “I felt angry because I didn’t want that to be the end, right? I wasn’t ready and didn’t want to accept that I would be losing my mom,” recalled Kimberly.
Recognizing this natural response, the team compassionately guided the sisters toward the grief counseling services available to them.
By sharing Gayle’s story, Kimberly hopes to encourage more people to access the breadth of services available through Hosparus Health, including the Inpatient Unit and Grief Counseling Services. “I want others to experience that same level of care and support that my family did during this difficult time.”
